The LGBTQ Wiki Project

A nonprofit and nonpartisan research project to improve understanding about LGBTQ+ people and communities and catalyze informed action.

The Problem
The lives and experiences of LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. are rich and diverse, and a wide range of information exists about the real-world and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people, created by a passionate community of nonprofits and researchers, as well as through public and government data collections.
The Problem
However, high-quality information about LGBTQ+ people is scattered. With information contained in many different websites, academic journals, news reports, and other sources, it can be difficult to locate and contextualize all the information that exists about LGBTQ+ people's lives on a particular subject.
The Problem
Real-world information about LGBTQ+ people is urgently needed to combat misinformation and catalyze action. Absent widely-available verifiable information, rumors, myths, and stereotypes about the LGBTQ+ community have taken root and continue to persist, in the past and in the present.
The Problem
Data collection about LGBTQ+ people and communities by government and common public sources of data is minimal. LGBTQ+ communities have only recently been added to some federal and state data collections, and the current Federal Administration and Congress are now obstructing or ending those data collections.
The Problem
Researchers, journalists, organizers, and decisionmakers need a reliable source of information about the LGBTQ+ community that aggregates and shares the wealth of verifiable knowledge that exists, so they can do their jobs and so their work can improve the health and wellbeing of LGBTQ people.

About the LGBTQ Wiki Project

Decisionmakers, journalists, organizers, and researchers need a database with reliable & updated information about LGBTQ communities to make informed decisions and take action. So we’re building it.

The goal of the LGBTQ Wiki Project is to create a Wiki that presents a rigorously researched, culturally competent, and thoroughly cited online database that represents the diversity and complexity of LGBTQ people’s lives and experiences. The database will be continuously updated with up-to-date information by its users and made available free to the public.
